Restylane® Family of Products
Comprised of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally produced by the body, the Restylane® family of products includes three FDA-approved dermal fillers designed to address many common signs of aging. They are Restylane®, Restylane® Silk and Restylane® Lyft (formerly known as Perlane®). All three products can achieve the desired result by enhancing facial volume. The original formula can smooth fine lines and creases around the nose, mouth and chin. These areas are sometimes called parenthesis or smile lines and marionette lines, respectively. Restylane® Silk is a smooth, gel-like substance specifically formulated for patients 21 and over who want to add natural-looking fullness and definition to the lips, as well as reduce facial lines. Restylane® Lyft has a thicker consistency that makes this product well suited to restore youthful fullness in the cheek areas.
Restylane® and Restylane® Silk typically last about six months, although your individual experience may vary. Restylane® Lyft results have been shown to last as long as nine months to a year. With each of these products, benefits should be almost immediately visible; however, some swelling, redness and tenderness may briefly occur following treatment. Downtime is minimal, and you should be able to return to normal activity immediately following the procedure. If you would like to extend the length of the effects, occasional “touch-up” sessions can help you maintain the benefits for longer periods.
JUVÉDERM Family of Products
One of the most popular and well-known line of dermal fillers, JUVÉDERM®, is another hyaluronic acid-based cosmetic injectable that can diminish symptoms of aging for a more youthful look. This family of products includes JUVÉDERM® Ultra and JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus. Both formulas are FDA-approved to add volume and hydration, though JUVÉDERM® Ultra has a smoother, thinner consistency while JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus has a thicker consistency. The thinner version can smooth mild to moderate fine lines and creases on and around the nose and mouth. The thicker one will be better suited for moderate to severe creases in these areas.
Both formulas of JUVÉDERM® can last anywhere from six months up to a year, depending on the product and your unique experience. Some redness, tenderness and swelling are common at the injection sites following treatment, though these effects should subside quickly. Benefits should be immediately apparent. Furthermore, you should be able to return to your normal routine after the procedure. As with many other cosmetic injectables, periodic maintenance sessions can help to extend the duration of benefits.
