Choosing to undergo a mommy makeover is an empowering decision for many moms who are ready to reclaim their bodies and confidence. At Ambay Plastic Surgery, we celebrate your choice to invest in yourself and your well-being. We know that while the promise of a stunning body is exhilarating, the recovery process may bring up some questions and concerns. Here we share what to expect—from the initial post-surgery period to your week by week healing and the breathtaking results that follow.
You’ve done your research and are ready to embrace a new you with a mommy makeover. Whether you’ve already had your surgery or are about to take that exciting next step, you know that a mommy makeover is a customized suite of procedures designed just for you!
Typically taking four to five hours, this outpatient surgery is performed under general anesthesia, ensuring your comfort throughout the process. Once your surgery is complete, you’ll be moved to a recovery room, where a dedicated and skilled medical team will closely monitor you as you wake up from anesthesia.
Expect to be fitted with compression garments immediately after surgery. This is crucial for your healing journey. These garments support and shape your healing tissues, reduce swelling, prevent fluid buildup and help your body adjust to its beautiful new contours. You will wear this for about six weeks to achieve the best possible results.
We know being a mom is a twenty-four-seven job. However, during your healing journey, you must take it easy. Arrange for help around the house, especially if you have young children, since you won’t be able to lift heavy objects or engage in strenuous activities. Focus on resting, staying hydrated, and eating nutritious foods to support your body’s healing process. Here’s what to expect week-by-week.
The first week of mommy makeover recovery is crucial for initial healing. You may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which are normal after extensive surgery. Dr. Ambay will prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection and pain medications to manage discomfort. It’s essential to follow the medication regimen precisely and take the full course of antibiotics as directed.
By the second week, you’ll notice gradual improvements in how you feel. The initial swelling and bruising should start subsiding, though you may still experience some discomfort. If drains were placed during your surgery, they are generally removed in the office between seven to ten days post-operation. Dr. Ambay will assess your healing progress and guide you in managing any remaining discomfort. Continue wearing your compression garments and avoid activities that could strain your incisions or muscles during your mommy makeover recovery time. Light walking is encouraged to promote circulation but be mindful not to overdo it. No running around in the park with the little ones, please. For now, cuddles will have to do.
As you enter the third and fourth weeks of recovery, you’ll notice a significant increase in your mobility and a decrease in swelling and bruising. You may feel well enough to resume light daily activities, but vigorous exercise or heavy lifting must be avoided. By this stage, your body will start to reveal its new contours, although it’s important to remember that complete healing and final results will take months to a year.
Around weeks five to six, most patients can gradually return to their normal activities, including work and light exercise, as advised by Dr. Ambay. Depending on your healing progress, the compression garments may no longer be necessary. We know young children may be eager for mom to chase them around the garden and play wrestling games, but please, listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too hard. While you may feel more energetic, your body is still healing internally. Dr. Ambay will provide detailed instructions on safely reintroducing activities to prevent setbacks.
Recovery times for the various procedures involved in a mommy makeover can vary. Here’s a quick overview to give you an idea:
One of the significant benefits of opting for a mommy makeover is the efficiency of the recovery process. Instead of undergoing multiple separate surgeries and enduring multiple recovery periods, a mommy makeover allows you to address several areas of concern simultaneously. This comprehensive approach means you only have to go through one recovery period, significantly reducing the overall time spent healing.
The long-term recovery phase of a mommy makeover extends beyond the six-week mark. Full healing can take several months, during which your body continues to adapt and settle into its new shape. Whether you had procedures like breast augmentation to restore fullness, a tummy tuck to tighten abdominal muscles, or liposuction to remove excess fat, your body needs time to fully recover and reveal the final results.
Your final mommy makeover results can take six months to a year to fully materialize, as residual swelling diminishes and your tissues continue to heal. Our patients often report a significant boost in confidence and self-esteem, enjoying the lasting benefits of their rejuvenated bodies.
